The community disregard of the garden prompted the city to take up the idea of restoring it. Today, this garden and a couple other small parks make up majority of Vasco’s green cover. However, the landscape of the economy is quickly evolving, paving the way for us to envision many such recreational and cultural spots that could meet the increasingly dynamic societal needs.
Design Intent
A quiet presence in the city, this municipal garden was being used for anything but its primary purpose. What was initially a fountain in the center of the garden, later became an empty hole in the ground. Lack of maintenance, seating, lighting and security, people in the neighbourhood felt unsafe to visit the park. This sparked the conversation of restoring the park and creating a central attraction within the park that elevates the current facade.
Initial ideas for the center gathering area
Increasing Footfall
Typical park events range from small picnic-like activities to the elderly enjoying a pleasant evening in the open. The park includes several features such as the main pavillion with an interactive walk-in light sculpture in the center, paved walkways, flowerbeds, sufficient comfortable seating and strategically placed general lighting to avoid dark spots in the night.
Repair & Reform
What was initially a fountain, later became an empty hole in the ground. After listening to the issues that caused this to happen we soon realized that the solution needed to be easy to maintain over time. This made us rethink the space to be utilized physically.
Rich Ecological History
Embracing the ecology of the existing Municipal Garden and creating sustainable opportunities for the neighborhood to experience and explore the landscape.
Before & After
Built for Everyone
A huge part of this restoration was to enable the community to use it which also meant making it accessible to all age groups. The park has wide entrances and walkways which are wheelchair accessible. Putting community at the heart of the park's design and implementation.
